THE HISTORY OF THE COACH

The word coach (kocsi) first appeared in written form in the account books by ?. Ulaszlo in 1493 as kochy. Its first depiction comes from Freihero Sigmund von Herbenstein in 1518. Its first depiction originates from Jeremias Schemel in 1568. However its origin dates from the second half of the 15th century. According to Bonfini, King Matthias gladly travelled with this light, fast, and subtly elaborated vehicle that was developed from a farm-wagon after he moved his residence to the freshly conquered Wienna from Buda in 1485. Kocs was one of the rest areas and feeding stations of the first Hungarian stagecoach postal service. However tradition has it for a long time that the coach was invented by King Mathias, according to the facts passenger cart is developed by craftsmen from the village of Kocs.

The Western European spreading of the coach dates back to the 15?16th century. First it was used in Italy and Austria, then in other countries of the Holy Roman Empire as well as in Spain and France. Its usage spread from the Dutch and Flemish areas to the British Isles. This is verified by the wide spread European usage of the word coach (kocsi). The words originating in it: coach (English), coche (French), die Kutsche (German), coche (Spanish), coccio (Italian), koc (Slovakian), koczy (Czech). The spreading of the coach from Kocs is closely relates to the four-wheeled carriage. Tradition has it that it is also a Hungarian invention, so these words do not always mean the same type of vehicle. During the centuries countless types of coaches were developed in the Carpathian basin. Several times different names were given to these (e.g. buggy, curvilinear coach, coach from Körös etc.)

Our exhibition’s purpose is to present the all kinds of tools used by cart wrights and blacksmiths through the phases of making a coach. We are going to refer to the saddlers, who are the makers of the harnesses used for?carriages and horses, and then our dear visitors are able to examine the
faithful reconstruction of the coach from Kocs preserving its 15th century dimensions and materials.
